X-Men Fan Art Teams Up Sailor Moon With Marvel’s Mutants

A talented artist on Twitter, Waldo Irby, has created a 90s-kid fantasy with a new piece of fan art depicting the characters from Sailor Moon and X-Men fiercely charging into battle together. Both properties started out as comics, and involve a group of young idealistic people with fantastic powers fighting for peace and protecting their loved ones, and their quintessential 90s vibes truly make them the perfect mash-up of crossover characters.

The American versions of the Sailor Moon TV Show and X-Men: The Animated Series both premiered in the early to mid 90s and quickly became staples of most kids Saturday Morning Cartoon blocks. While Sailor Moon started as a Japanese manga and X-Men started as an American comic, both touched a similar place in 90s kids hearts and minds, and chances are that if child was watching one, they were also watching the other. While Sailor Moon has had multiple adaptations and revivals, X-Men was recently announced to be coming back to Disney+.

Now, Waldo Irby’s gorgeous stylized art, posted to his Twitter and Tumblr, is titled “Sailor Moon X” and shows the main characters from each heroic team fighting some unseen enemy, perfectly showing off how these two teams would work great together in battle. Irby’s gorgeous drawing uses one of X-Men’s best team rosters, the one most closely associated with the 90s animated series, comprised of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Wolverine, and Rogue. Irby chose to include Sailor Moon in his piece as well as her two teammates Sailor Mercury, an incredibly intelligent young woman whose powers are connected to ice and water, and Sailor Jupiter, commonly seen as the “muscle” of the team as she possesses super strength and powers associated with both plant life and lightning.

Waldo Irby made a lot of brilliant creative choices in his piece of fan art, namely placing Sailor Moon and Cyclops front and center as the leaders of each team, but especially his choice of pairing up Storm and Sailor Jupiter. Both of these characters utilize lightning as one of their main abilities, and the art depicts Storm casually throwing Jupiter some lightning for her to use against their anonymous enemy, a perfect collaboration between two iconic female heroes. While Sailor Moon’s less-than-subtle LGBTQ+ presence was censored from its Western broadcasting, both Sailor Moon and X-Men: The Animated Series were an awakening for many young queer people, and seeing these two iconic teams pairing up would be a true joy for queer fans of the legendary heroes. While Irby did not use the exact X-Men costumes from X-Men: TAS, he still ensured they were 90s-appropriate, using Wolverine’s brown outfit from the X-Men arcade game and portraying Jean Grey with her modernized Russell Dauterman look that was clearly inspired by Jean’s 90s looks. With X-Men: The Animated Series being rebooted in the near future, and Sailor Moon having gone through a resurgence with the release of Sailor Moon Crystal in the mid-2010s, this is honestly the perfect time for such a cool piece of fan art to be released.
