What Is Welcome To Plathville About (Is It Problematic?)

There is no doubt that Welcome to Plathville has caught the attention of TLC fans, but some are worried that there may be elements of the show that will become problematic for the network. TLC is known to share stories of families that are “out of the box” when compared to typical members of society. The Plaths are no different, as the family members share their takes on life in rural Georgia and beyond.
TLC viewers feel that Welcome to Plathville stars Kim and Barry Plath‘s strict rules ruin their entire family dynamic, and hurt their children in the process. The Plath family seems out of touch with the modern world, mostly due to Barry and Kim’s strict thinking, such as their belief that sugar and TV are bad for their children. Kim, the mother of nine to Ethan, Hosanna, Micah, Moriah, Isaac, Amber, Cassia, Joshua, and Mercy Plath, comes across as a bit controlling, as she tries too hard to keep her children in line. As viewers saw in the first season, the gigantic Plath family is no longer tight-knit. In fact, it has fractured into three separate households.
Welcome to Plathville season 4 just dropped, but there are still more questions than answers when it comes to the Plath family setup. Some of the older children are still on the outs with their parents, while Kim seems to be struggling with her identity. Viewers are starting to wonder if the show has validity anymore, or has turned into a three-ring circus.

Welcome to Plathville follows the lives of Kim, Barry, and their children. Fans were shocked to learn that the Plath children lived in America without the Internet, cell phones, and sugar. Fans were quick to compare the family to the Duggars. Kim and Barry chose to leave the normal world behind and raise their children under the umbrella of strict and conservative Christian values. Sadly, their upbringing didn’t prepare any of the children for the growing pains of adulthood. For the most part, the show is sweet and wholesome, but there could be rough times ahead.

For the most part, Welcome to Plathville shares one family’s story and fundamental Christian beliefs. Kim and Barry have been linked to the No Greater Joy Ministries, a controversial Christian fundamentalist organization, which the Duggars have also been connected to. TLC viewers were alarmed after learning that the founders Michael and Debi Pearl are authors of the highly criticized parenting book, “To Train Up A Child.” The book teaches homeschooling parents how to make their kids obey them. Kim and Barry have started to acknowledge their faults, but Welcome to Plathville fans do not believe that they will stop using religion to manipulate their children. This is one of the most problematic elements of the controversial TLC series.
