Good morning Nigeria, welcome to Naija News roundup of top newspapers headlines in Nigeria for today, Friday, 13th May 2022
President Muhammadu Buhari has finally shown concern about the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
Naija News recalls that ASUU had embarked on a month warning strike in early February over the failure of the Buhari’s government to meet its demands.
After a series of deliberations, ASUU’s demands were still not met at the end of the warning strike in March.
Without hesitation, ASUU on Monday extended its ongoing roll-over strike by another three months to give the government more time to meet its demands.
Naija News understands that President Buhari has been mute about the lingering strike which has caused university students across the country to return to their parent’s homes while others find their way into society doing dirty jobs.
However, the Nigerian leader on Thursday urged ASUU to consider the plight of the students and call off the industrial action.
Naija News understands that Buhari expressed his concern today at the 19th National Productivity Day Celebration and Conferment of National Productivity Order of Merit Award, held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
At least two persons have been reportedly arrested in connection with the gruesome killing of a female Christian student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto on Thursday.
The internet went agog today after a disturbing video surfaced showing moments a mob lynched and set ablaze a lady identified as Deborah over alleged blasphemous statement against the Islam Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W).
The fellows are said to have called out Deborah from her hostel and descended on her with sticks and stones until she could no longer breathe, thereafter set her on fire.
The disturbing incident has since attracted a barrage of reactions on and off the internet, Naija News reports.
In a bid to bring the perpetrators to book, the State police command confirmed on Thursday evening that two persons have been arrested while others are still been trailed.
Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has openly endorsed the presidential ambition of the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu.
Naija News reports that the Kaduna governor openly backed Tinubu’s ambition at the Murtala Square in Kaduna on Thursday.
It was gathered that Tinubu alongside the former Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, former EFCC boss, Nuhu Ribadu and other dignitaries were in the state to seek support of delegates ahead of the ruling party’s primaries.
Shetimma had earlier assured the delegates that the Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai was “solidly by their side,” according to Daily Trust.
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has said it may move sensitive election materials from the vaults of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Naija News understands that this is coming after alleged moves by the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, to join the race to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
Speaking on Thursday in Abuja at the second quarterly meeting with the media, INEC boss said the electoral umpire may be forced to relocate its sensitive materials.
Yakubu said the CBN is responsible for the storage and movement of sensitive materials, adding that INEC has never doubted the capacity of the CBN to discharge that responsibility.
The Presidency has said ministers and political appointees who are seeking elective office but refused to resign would be sacked.
Naija News reports that Presidential Spokesman, Garba Shehu, made this known in an interview on Channels Television on Thursday.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had directed members of his cabinet and other government appointees nursing political ambitions to resign before May 16.
According to Shehu, any political appointee who has political ambition but continues to stay in office “would have someone decide for him or her”.
The presidential spokesman noted that the presidential directive is clear and straightforward, stressing that the appointees have to obey the order.
Nineteen days after the Nigeria Identity Management Commission barreď about 72 million telecommunication subscribers for failing to comply with the Federal Government’s NIN-Subscriber Identity Module policy, the agency issued 80.7 million National Identification Numbers.

Following the ban, registration for NIN increased by 4.67 per cent from 77.1 million as of March 21, 2022, to 80.7 million as of April 23, 2022.
According to a breakdown of the data, about 20.56 million NINs have been issued in the North-Western part of the nation; 20.23 million in the South-West; 13.59 million in the North-Central, 9.96 million in the North-East, 9.34 million in the South-South, and 6.87 million in the South-East.
7. After Threats To His Presidential Ambition By Islamic Fanatics, Atiku Deletes Facebook, Twitter Posts On Deborah’s Killing
Former Vice President and presidential aspirant Atiku Abubakar has hurriedly deleted a post he made on his Facebook and Twitter pages condemning the killing of Deborah Samuel, a Christian female student at Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto State
Naija News had reported earlier that a young lady identified as Deborah was lynched and set ablaze by her Muslim colleagues for allegedly insulting Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.
A gory image and video clip of the incident on Thursday caused stirs on social media as netizens took sides based on religious beliefs and personal convictions.
Atiku, who is hoping to grab the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket, had taken to Twitter and Facebook to condemn the barbaric act.
However, northern Islamic fanatics, who were unhappy with his post, threatened to deal with the former vice president at the presidential polls.
While some asked him to forget his presidential ambition, others slammed him for trying to get the support of southerners.
Following the threats, Atiku, who is usually seen as a moderate statesman, deleted his post less than an hour after publication.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has told Nigerians to expect news on his presidential ambition soon.
Emefiele also urged the citizens to watch out if he would be affected by the presidential directive to political appointees seeking elective positions in the 2023 general elections to vacate their offices before Monday.
The apex bank chief made this known in a chat with State House correspondents after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House on Thursday.
The CBN Governor also said he was not worried about the speculations surrounding his purported presidential ambition, adding that he is loving the media attention.

In a statement issued to journalists on Thursday, the Director, Army public relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, explained that the personnel were responding to a distress call of an attack on Tati community, in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba before they were ambushed.

Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu has declared elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark and others as betrayers of the southeast people.
Kalu however pointed out that the people of the region are wiser and understand the need to align with mainstream politics in Nigeria.
He also wondered why Chief Clark, the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) chose to attack him alone over his decision to quit the 2023 presidential race while ignoring others.
Naija News reports that Clark had earlier labelled Kalu as a dishonest and insincere person who betrayed the Igbo people for his own selfish desires by withdrawing from the 2023 presidential race and declaring support for Senate President Ahmad Lawan who is from the northeast.
But Senator Kalu in a personally signed news statement on Thursday in which he responded to Chief Clark, denied any wrongdoing.
The lawmaker said while many were clamouring for a 2023 southern presidency, he was the first person to demand a southeast presidency before others joined him.
