The Social Relief of Distress grant (SRD) is a one-time payment made to those who are in such desperate financial need that they are unable to meet their or their families’ most basic necessities.

Applications for the Covid-19 SRD must be lodged on the electronic platform. Once you’ve submitted your application, it’s important to know what happens after you’ve submitted your application.
This is what happens after you’ve submitted your SRD Grant application:
- Sassa is required to, before the end of the month, approve or reject all applications for the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress received before the 15th of the month.
- In a scenario where your application is rejected, Sassa encourages you to lodge an appeal by applying for reconsideration.
- Following your application, an electronic receipt or SMS notification of the outcome of the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress application must be provided to you by Sassa.
- If an application for the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress is approved, Sassa must inform you of the outcome by electronic communication or any other means of communication of such approval.
Although the grant was initially introduced in May 2020 during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has since been reintroduced. The most recent instance of reintroduction was March 2022, when it was announced the R350 SRD grant would be extended for an additional year.
