SASSA News Today 30Th August 2022 –Although millions of people applied for the R350 Grant in April, many of its former recipients were no longer eligible for the necessary assistance. This was brought on by numerous modifications to the prerequisites, many of which have since been altered.

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant regulations have been updated by the Department of Social Development (DSD). The goal of these changes is to broaden the audience for this essential relief.

The changes made to the resolutions that increase the number of people eligible for the SRD grant have been welcomed by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa). Only about 5 million people were qualified for the grant under the prior rules. But in August, over 11 million people requested the grant.

These amendments resulted in the SRD grant income threshold increasing to the food poverty line of R624. This income refers to any money detected in an applicant’s bank account. The income threshold refers to the maximum amount of money a person is allowed to have in their bank account and still qualify for the SRD grant.

Bank verification will no longer be the main criteria for determining eligibility and there will be no need for beneficiaries to answer questionnaires every three months to confirm that they need the SRD grant.

Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu has revealed that Sassa has faced several challenges with paying R350 grants to beneficiaries. They explained that this was due to applicants not providing their banking details.

Zulu said, “We encourage all applicants to provide us with their correct bank details so that we can timeously facilitate their grant payments”.

Additionally, the DSD disclosed that grant recipients could not irrationally decline job or educational opportunities. The DSD had previously consented to share data with other government agencies, such as the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure.
