It seems impossible to gain admission into a Nigerian tertiary institution without passing the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.
The examination which is designed by the Federal ministry of education is aimed at admitting only the best, qualified secondary school leavers into the higher education terrain.
Only students who pass the examination would be eligible for admission. As lofty as this is, so many Nigerian students dislike the idea.
Some have been unable to scale through the hurdle of JAMB. The exams have seemingly slowed down the progress of the education of many Nigerian students and various alternatives are being considered.

IJMB
IJMB is an acronym that stands for Interim Joint Admission Matriculation Board. It is the foremost qualification examination alternative to the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam.
This initiative was started by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and she the Nigerian universities governing body, the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), endorsed it, other Nigerian universities incorporated the program into their academic structure.
Using IJMB as an admission entry mode will see a student run a program for two (2) years and on completion get admitted into 200 level instead of 100 level.
The plan with IJMB was to create a remedial program that would help persons who could not make it to the JAMB cut-off mark gain admission.
It was originally designed for northerners but it has now spread to other parts of the country and has become one of the ways private Nigerian universities offer admission without JAMB.
JUPEB
The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) was founded in 2013 by a conclave of 10 universities led by the University of Lagos.
Although unpopular, it has been approved by the Federal ministry of education and prospective candidates can use it to gain admission without writing JAMB.
