NSFAS means National Student Financial Aid Scheme .
NSFAS, or National Student Financial Aid Scheme, was established according to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme Act of 1999 and incorporated Tertiary Education Fund of South Africa (TEFSA), which stopped operating in 2000.
The NSFAS Act allows students to apply for financial aid, be it a bursary or student loan. These applications do, however, come with certain conditions: each student undergoes a “needs test” to determine how much financial aid they require and if they are eligible. This system is being changed currently to make financial aid available to the missing middle.
Paid to the higher education institute
Under the NSFAS Act, the bursary or loan is paid directly to a student’s place of learning, rather than to the student. This also allows NSFAS to engage with universities and keep track of those who receive financial aid and their academic progress.
Funding
NSFAS makes financial aid available to students in the form of bursaries and student loans. This allows students in need to finance their studies at either university or a TVET college and so further their education and career prospects.
How do I create a myNSFAS account on NSFAS Website?
- Log onto www.nsfas.org.za and click on the myNSFAS tab.
- Click on register. Tick on the acceptance option to allow NSFAS to verify and validate the information you provided.
- Type in your ID number as it appears on your ID document.
- Type in your name and surname as they appear on your ID Document.
- Type in your email address and cellphone number. Your username will be your email address.
- Create a password and confirm your password.
- Upload a copy of your ID.
- Click on register.
- After clicking register, a One Time Pin (OTP) will be sent to the email address and cellphone number you provided.
- Check your cellphone and email for the OTP.
- Type in the OTP in the tab provided and click submit.
- You will then receive another SMS and email confirming that your myNSFAS account has been created. You may now continue with your application.

How to update your NSFAS account details:
- Login to nsfas.org.za
- Enter your username and password (on the ‘already registered’ tab)
- Click ‘sign in’
- Select ‘My Personal Details’ and delete incorrect cell phone number and replace it with correct one (the same can be done with other incorrect information)
- Click ‘update details’
- A one-time pin (OTP) will be sent to the new cell phone number
- You will be asked to enter and submit the OTP on the NSFAS website once it has been sent to you
- Once this is done, your details are updated.

What are the NSFAS bursary academic requirements?
You need to have passed Grade 9 to 12 to receive NSFAS funding to study at a TVET college and Grade 12 to receive funding to study at a university or TVET college. If you are approved for NSFAS funding, you will be required to meet the academic admission requirements of the university or TVET college before NSFAS allocates any funding to you.

Latest NSFAS News
NSFAS has decided to open up an application window for University students who did not apply for NSFAS funding in 2021 but need it. These students should be without any form of bursary and financial support to be eligible.
These NSFAS bursary applications will be open for two weeks until 3 September 2021.
How will the applications work?
Students are urged to submit their names to the Financial Aid Office at their respective University.
Universities will then need to compile a list of students that qualify for NSFAS but do not have any form of funding and have not been able to apply for funding.
Students who qualify for this round of funding should be submitted by the University which means that the student can’t submit the application directly to NSFAS.
After the University submits this list, NSFAS will then open up the system for those students only.
Mambolo said, “There were a number of tipping problems emanating from the introduction of the student centred model in 2014 and also followed by the announcement of free education in 2017 so all these issues actually made the scheme to rethink itself”.
NSFAS applications for 2022 will open after this window closes as applications usually open in September.
