Gauteng Education Department To Investigate Death Of A Grade 10 Learner
The Gauteng Education Department has announced that an independent investigation into the murder of a grade 10 student at a Gauteng school would be launched. The MEC for the provincial department paid a visit to the deceased’s family and spoke to the media about the next measures.
The death of a Grade 10 student at Tsakane Secondary School in Ekurhuleni has prompted Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi to announce that his department will launch an independent investigation.
On Tuesday last week, the learner is said to have died from injuries incurred after being beaten with a golf stick by a teacher and general assistant from the institution. After visiting the learner’s family, Lesufi spoke to the media.
Lesufi went on to say that they are presently working to figure out more facts about the nature of the altercation, and that once they get the evidence, they will take the appropriate disciplinary action.
We don’t want to be the department that has to explain things to the family. So we’ll hire an independent individual to question everyone, get the appropriate information, and, if we need to act, we’ll act decisively as a department based on that evidence.
The MEC also expressed his condolences to the family and apologized on behalf of the department. Meanwhile, students flocked to the streets on Monday to seek justice for the slain learner by marching throughout the township.
