Elvis Movie Image Gives New Look At Baz Luhrmann Biopic’s Presley

An exclusive image from Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic Elvis offers an exciting new glimpse at the film’s titular character. Luhrmann’s hotly anticipated project will officially hit screens next month and will see Austin Butler take on the role of rock-n-roll superstar, Elvis Presley. The film is set to detail the star’s immense rise to fame in the 1950s and beyond, as well as exploring the complicated relationship he shared with his manager Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks. The film also sees Helen Thompson and Richard Roxburgh star as Presley’s parents, while Olivia DeJonge will also star opposite Butler as his ex-wife, Priscilla Presley.

Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce, and Jeremy Doner have teamed up with Luhrmann to write the biopic, which is set to have its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival later this month, before its theatrical release on June 24. Many of the details surrounding Elvis have been somewhat shrouded in mystery since the film first began production back in 2020, with this likely to continue until its official debut. Recent weeks have seen various teasers released for the biopic, which have offered the first proper glimpses at Butler in this highly coveted role, with the actor having secured the part over a number of big-name stars, including Harry Styles and Miles Teller.

Now, an exciting new image has been shared of Butler’s Presley, offering a new look at the actor’s near-perfect resemblance to the late singer. Shared alongside an exclusive interview with Butler, the image was released as part of Empire‘s summer preview and shows the star’s transformation. In the image, Butler embodies Presley’s star quality by gazing past the camera, with his black hair swooped up into the singer’s iconic quiffed style. Check out the image below.

In the accompanying interview, Butler discussed how he felt personally connected to the role, as both he and Presley sadly lost their mothers when they were just 23-years-old. The actor went on to share how this ultimately played a part in him securing the role of Elvis, as his audition saw him sing one of Presley’s hits “Unchained Melody,” revealing that he was singing it for his mother. The film will see Butler lend his vocals for Presley’s earlier years, however, as the film progresses, Butler’s voice will be mixed with various recordings of Presley to give as authentic of a sound as possible. Presley’s ex-wife Priscilla recently praised Butler as “outstanding” in the role, after sharing that Luhrmann had given her a private screening of the film.

If this new Elvis image, as well as previous teasers for the film, are anything to go by, Butler’s portrayal of this beloved icon could certainly be one for the history books. While his physical appearance is certainly uncanny, from what’s been teased so far, Butler also appears to have put a lot of time and effort into emulating Presley’s iconic moves and mannerisms. After a number of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many are incredibly eager to get their hands on this biopic, and now there isn’t long to go until Elvis finally hits the big screen.
