Elemer of the Briar is a Great Enemy Boss in Elden Ring that resides in the Shaded Castle of Atlus Plateau. Since Elemer is an optional boss and not part of any NPC’s questline, most adventurers might not encounter this boss or even know he exists. Nevertheless, the Shaded Castle’s ruler has a secret in-game achievement/trophy tied with him, including a unique Greatsword and Greatshield in Elden Ring. Elemer’s mighty Marais Executioner’s Sword, in particular, is incredibly effective for both staggering and bleeding enemies.
To find Elemer of the Briar in Elden Ring, Tarnished travelers must make their way to Atlus Plateau’s Erdtree-Gazing Hill Site of Grace and head directly north through the valley. Alternatively, adventurers can go to the Bridge of Iniquity Grace point and cross the bridge, heading towards the southern cliffs. There are two Spiritspring Jumps where players can easily descend the ridge and reach the canyon trail leading to the Shaded Castle.
A toxic marsh surrounds Shaded Castle and is overrun with slugs, zombified humanoids, and corrupted monks. To get from the outer ward to the castle’s interior, enter the walls from the Shaded Castle Ramparts Grace Site in the east. A tall ladder leading to the top of the inner battlements can be found in the western portion of the fort. From here, jump atop the three rooftops to reach the Shaded Castle Inner Gate Grace site. Next, climb the ladder and get through the sub-layer below Castellan’s Hall. The first building will have several guards hiding behind corners waiting to ambush the player, so tread cautiously. Finally, the linear pathway will lead to a lift to the wooden overpass connected to Elemer’s boss chamber.
The boss fight Elemer of the Briar isn’t brutally difficult like other infamous Great Enemies, but Tarnished will be punished if they enter combat too nonchalantly. Elemer is equipped with Marais Executioner’s Sword, a Greatsword that can attack distant targets thanks to its unique weapon art, Eochaid’s Dancing Blade. As a result, both melee and ranged players must respect the boss’s attack range. Furthermore, he uses his Briar Greatshield as an offensive weapon and will occasionally execute a swift dash towards the player, slamming them to the ground. Overall, the fight is well-balanced and far from agonizing, as long as Tarnished maintain their position and attack whenever Elemer completes a combo.
Those who find Elemer of the Briar too troublesome to fight through conventional means can attempt to cheese him via two techniques. First, those with long-ranged Spells such as Rock Sling can stand at the boss room’s yellow mist, casting the projectiles at his stationary body without starting the fight. On the other hand, those with more melee-focused builds in Elden Ring can stick to his backside, specifically the area on the right near the shield on his back. If players are in the right spot, his smashing shield attack with trigger, causing him to be stuck in an infinite loop of slamming down while players effortlessly circle him. Once Elemer’s dead, Elden Ring Tarnished will receive 24,000 Runes, the Marais Executioner’s Sword, the Briar Greatshield, and a well-earned achievement.
Elden Ring is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
