DSS denies calling for Buhari’s tenure elongation

Published

on

The Department of State Services has denied calling for the elongation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure.  DSS Spokesperson, Peter Afunanya in a statement released on Thursday May 12, said the report which claimed it was testing “the water for tenure elongation for Buhari” was aimed at maligning the agency and misleading the public. The statement read;  NO CALL FOR TENURE ELONGATION BY DSSThe attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to a misleading and mischievous publication by SaharaReporters titled Nigeria’s Secret Police, DSS Tests the Water on Tenure Elongation for Buhari, Tells Journalists, CSOs 2023 Elections May Not Hold. In the said report, the Service was accused of informing participants at its April 6th brainstorming session with CSOs/NGOs that the 2023 general elections might not hold due to insecurity. The report further stated that the session was a ruse to sell tenure elongation to the public.Consequently, the DSS disassociates itself from the publication and categorically states that the information is false and obviously fabricated to malign it and mislead the populace. It is curious that the session which was applauded and described as innovative by participants including credible Civil Society groups would be misrepresented by SaharaReporters that was neither invited to nor participated in the exercise. The Online paper, in its characteristic gutter journalism, had initially claimed that participants at the session were harassed. When the fake news did not garner the expected attention, it resorted to another gimmick aimed at dragging the Service into an unnecessary term elongation debate. However, the statement by the Presidency reiterating its definite stance to hand over power to a new president on 29th May 2023, has vindicated the Service and countered the deliberate effort by SaharaReporters to create confusion. While the Service, in the circumstance, aligns with the Presidency, it urges the public to disregard the lies of SaharaReporters and its promoter whose activities are usually antithetical to a decorous environment. It is common knowledge that SaharaReporters is mischievously desperate and takes delight in promoting negative narratives against Government and its officials. The paper has not only remained biased and sensational in its reportage, it has sustained seditious attacks against security institutions and particularly the Service which may not hesitate to seek legal redress in the face of continued misrepresentationMeanwhile, politicians and highly placed personalities are advised to desist from making unguarded statements capable of derailing efforts to deepen the country’s democracy as well as mobilise citizens for national unity and stability. The post DSS denies calling for Buharis tenure elongation appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Robert Sarver to sell Phoenix Suns and Mercury after N-word scandal

Published

on

Robert Sarver will be selling both the Phoenix Suns and the Phoenix Mercury after an NBA investigation revealed that he used the n-word multiple times during his tenure as an owner in the leagues. The NBA investigation also revealed that Sarver made inappropriate comments toward women, and didn’t treat his employees fairly or equally. Commissioner Adam Silver who fined him $10 million and suspended him one year over the offence, had insisted the punishment was strong enough. Sarver however announced on Wednesday morning September 21, that he is “beginning the process of seeking buyers for the Suns and the Mercury”, just after fans and multiple star players including LeBron James, Chris Paul and Draymond Green called for more severe sanctions.  He said in the statement;  “Words that I deeply regret now overshadow nearly two decades of building organizations that brought people together — and strengthened the Phoenix area — through the unifying power of professional men’s and women’s basketball.”But in our current unforgiving climate, it has become painfully clear that that is no longer possible — that whatever good I have done, or could still do, is outweighed by things I have said in the past.”I do not want to be a distraction to these two teams and the fine people who work so hard to bring the joy and excitement of basketball to fans around the world.”I want what’s best for these two organizations, the players, the employees, then fans, the community, my fellow owners, the NBA and the WNBA. This is the best course of action for everyone.”In the meantime, I will continue to work on becoming a better person, and continuing to support the community in meaningful ways. Thank you for continuing to root for the Suns and the Mercury, embracing the power that sports has to bring us together.”The post Robert Sarver to sell Phoenix Suns and Mercury after N-word scandal appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.

Court refuses to grant Baba Ijesha‘s bail application pending appeal

Published

on

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of Ikeja Special Offences Court on Wednesday September 21, refused to grant a bail application filed by convicted Nollywoord actor, James Olarewaju, alias Baba Ijesha. Ijesha had sought bail for an appeal to the five-year conviction for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. Taiwo struck out the bail application on grounds of the actor not meeting exceptional circumstances and criteria.  The judge said;  “The applicant must show special and exceptional circumstances because the term given to him is five years which is to run concurrently.“There is no evidence that the appeal has been entered and there is no indication before this court that the court will not treat the case expeditiously.“It is in the view of this court that the applicant has failed to show special circumstances to warrant him bail because he is facing a serious crime.“In view of this case, I am inclined to refuse the bail application of the applicants pending appeal.”  The post Court refuses to grant Baba Ijeshas bail application pending appeal appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
