Below Deck Sailing Yacht: All About New Deckhand Barnaby Birkbeck

After deckhand Tom Pearson left Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 3, it was confirmed that his replacement, Barnaby Birkbeck, will be joining the cast. For the first time ever, Captain Glenn Shephard had to fire one of his crew members following a huge safety issue. Tom was a green deckhand who was eager to learn the ropes on Parsifal III. However, he kept making minor mistakes that left first mate Gary King frustrated.
During Tom’s night watch, he failed to report the anchor dragging right away, which caused the boat to run aground. Captain Glenn and the deck crew had to scramble to right the boat, while the charter guests looked on. Following the disastrous incident, Captain Glenn felt he couldn’t trust Tom with the safety of the boat, so he let him go. Tom was understandably disappointed in himself but chalked it up to a learning lesson. Since his departure, the deck crew has been running with one member short, but deckhand Barnaby Birkbeck will soon provide relief for the team.
In a preview shared by Bravo, Barnaby is seen meeting his crew for the first time. As Captain Glenn goes over his job history, Barnaby explained that while Parsifal III is only his second superyacht, he has a lot of experience sailing. Barnaby grew up in Singapore and started sailing with his father when he was eleven years old. He and his dad started racing their boat for fun and realized they were good at it. Soon they were winning national racing championships in Singapore.

Barnaby is originally from Brighton, England, but has traveled the world teaching wealthy people water sports. The new Below Deck Sailing Yacht deckhand has an impressive list of clients, including President Barack Obama. Barnaby shared with deckhand Kelsie Goglia that he was on a private island in Greece teaching billionaires how to “eFoil and wakeboard,” when he got the call for Below Deck Sailing Yacht. Barnaby is also the founder of Electric Car Converts, which converts classic cars to run on electric power, helping to save the environment.
Tom isn’t the only Below Deck Sailing Yacht crew member to leave Parsifal III this season. Second stew Gabriela Barragan recently quit mid-season due to not being able to handle the stress of the boat. Being down two people had the Parsifal III crew working double time. Oftentimes, the deck crew had to pitch in and help the interior with cleanup and service. In Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 2, this caused tension between Gary and Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher. This season they seem to be getting along much better, and hopefully, Barnaby’s addition to the crew will provide smooth sailing for the rest of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 3.
