American Idol: Jay Copeland Announces Release Of New Single After Exit

One day after he was eliminated from American Idol season 20, Top 7 finalist Jay Copeland announced that he is releasing a new single. Jay is a 23-year-old musician from Salisbury, Maryland. Before his Idol audition, he had been in graduate school on a fellowship for a master’s degree in acting after graduating from Salisbury College with a bachelor’s degrees in theater and music. Jay received one of the three platinum tickets of the season at his Austin audition after his rousing rendition of “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” by Stevie Wonder. He sailed through Hollywood Week and made it to the American Idol Top 24, but America did not vote him into the Top 20. However, judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan chose to save him from elimination and put him through to the Top 20.
Jay continued to impress everyone with his performances, including his Top 11 stunner, “Lilac Wine” by Jeff Buckley, which was chosen for him by Katy during the Judges’ Song Contest. In his final week of the show, Jay performed “I Have Nothing” by Whitney Houston for his TikTok choice and “A Song For Mama” for his Mother’s Day dedication to his mom. Unfortunately, he earned the lowest number of votes from America, and he was eliminated from the competition along with Christian Guardino.
However, Jay is not letting his exit from American Idol discourage him, and he announced in a post on Instagram that he will release his single “Unlonely” this Friday. He wrote, “It’s a bop! Here’s to the summer and new beginnings.” Unlike some of his fellow American Idol finalists such as HunterGirl and Fritz Hager, Jay has never sung an original song on the show, so it will be interesting to see what this new song will sound like.
Jay also expressed his gratitude for his time on American Idol in his Instagram post. He wrote, “What a life changing experience! I’m sending nothing but love to every single one of you!” In the comments section, his followers, including several American Idol contestants, returned that love. Fellow platinum ticket winner Kenedi Anderson, who left the competition before the Top 24, wrote “LOVE YOU BOO.” Lady K, who was eliminated before the Top 7, wrote “So happy and proud of you!! Can’t wait to link some more let’s get lit and take over these music streets.” Nicolina, who made it into the Top 5, said, “U are so amazing jay. love u foreverrrrr.” And American Idol season 19 runner-up Willie Spence wrote, “So proud of you @theejaycopeland you killed it! This is just the beginning.”
Jay was a frontrunner in the competition when he received an American Idol season 20 platinum ticket. Although he did not receive enough votes to move forward in the competition, he has more than enough talent to launch a successful post-American Idol career. His new single, “Unlonely,” is sure to be a big hit.
American Idol airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
